This will be graded on completion, but also on its merits in composing, written expression, and usage\/mechanics. (For more information on the SOL Writing Domains, you can see my post <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mrshawke.com\/2008\/07\/11\/teaching-the-virginia-sol-writing-domains\/\">here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>Ninth-graders have begun their independent novel-reading, <em>To Kill a Mockingbird<\/em>. The first reading quiz is Thursday, on chapters 1-6. Calendars list reading assignments by day; if these homework assignments are followed, the reading is fairly easy, usually less than 15 pages a night. Note-taking is encouraged, and notes may be used on quizzes. <\/p>\n<p>I will be contacting a lot of parents this week about grades. I worked hard this weekend to get everything graded, so I could have an accurate picture of where each student is. <\/p>\n<p>Finally, I checked materials today and will finish doing so tomorrow. Unfortunately, there are far too many students who don&#8217;t have the materials required for class yet. This is for a grade, as specified on the syllabus.<\/p>\n<h3><a title=\"Required Materials\" name=\"materials\"><\/a>Required Materials<\/h3>\n<p><strong>These should be brought to class every day:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>A binder<\/li>\n<li>Loose-leaf paper<\/li>\n<li>Two wireless, bound composition books<\/li>\n<li>Blue or black pen<\/li>\n<li>Red pen or pencil<\/li>\n<li>No. 2 pencil<\/li>\n<li>White-out<\/li>\n<li>Highlighter<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>To keep in class:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>200 index cards (any size or color)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Click on the links to download the calendar PDFs.
