Lucas’ Famous Americans Project

I was not disappointed when Lucas chose Abraham Lincoln for his 2nd-grade Famous Americans project. And I’m elated with what he did with it!

He picked out the red posterboard at Hobby Lobby; drew by hand and cut out the “bubble letters”; wrote a detailed paragraph explaining Lincoln’s most important accomplishments; drew and colored his picture in two parts; and then glued it all in place.

Awesome job, Lukey-Luke!!

Sweetbrier Mag Design

I didn’t put the whole package out of the guidance department shelves, but this Sweet Briar College design caught my eye today.

I really like the color scheme. But even more, I like the treatment of the title, especially the flower taking the place of the “O” and the stem taking the place of the horizontal lines in the “F” and the “H.”

Fryed Chickin’s ‘It’s Christmas’

01 its christmas by Fryedchickin

I recorded this back in 2001, I think.

My friend Eddie Cochran had written a bunch of songs, and I went out to his and Leilani’s house many times to sing along with whatever instrumental tracks had been recorded. He had me standing in the bathroom with the door closed, headphones and mic cords trailing under the door.

I believe this is one of many that he dumped into the Flat Five studio mix, re-recording parts. I’m hazy on the technical stuff, since I, er, didn’t do any of it. 😛 But that might account for the timing issues. Not sure.

Eddie says it features me, him, Steve Edmunds and Carlos Morales. He would know.

Anyway, it’s a cool song, and I miss singing Eddie’s music.

Disposing of Sacramentals

I made crosses out of the palm leaves we got this past Palm Sunday and put them up in the “new” house this weekend.

Kevin and the boys buried the remaining strings and pieces that had fallen off the fronds. (Since they’re blessed, we can’t just throw them away.) Kevin dug a hole and put the palm pieces in, and the boys put the dirt back and patted it down. Then, they said the Our Father and three Hail Marys and sang The Gloria.

Birthday Cupcake :)

Happy Birthday to our sweet five-year-old, Atticus!!

Yesterday, we had a birthday dinner with family and close friends at Chick-fil-A. Today’s his birthday, but CFA is closed on Sundays, and he really wanted to be able to play in the play place. (You can see by his sweaty hair that he’d already enjoyed quite a bit of that before cupcake time.)

I can’t believe it’s been five years since he was born, but he’s now in kindergarten, reading and learning. The days are long, but the years are short

LOVE YOU, ATTIE!! =)

Atticus’ Grandpa posted a lot of pictures from last night on a blog, too: http://atticusfive.blogspot.com/

And here’s another picture…of my little superheroes-in-training, Atticus and Lucas:

Butternut Squash

The last time we were at my parents’ house, my dad gave Lucas one of the butternut squashes he grew in his garden this year.

So the next week, I cooked it in the microwave like he told me, just like a baked potato: poke a bunch of holes in it and cook it about 10 minutes.

When I cut it open, it looked like a pumpkin on the inside. Lucas and Kevin both liked it a lot. They both said it tasted like sweet potato.

If I cook one again, I’ll probably scoop the squash off the inside wall, rather than just cut it up with the rind, or whatever it’s called in squash. It was just SO hot that I had a hard time touching it enough to cut it off.

You may have noticed I’m not big on cooking veggies. It’s usually cans and frozen around here..

The Average Bear

Kevin’s always telling the boys he wants them to be “smarter than the average bear,” encouraging them not to settle for doing or being the bare minimum.

Tonight at dinner, Lucas said he wanted to be smarter than the average bear, and Atticus repeated it, too.

Then, Attie asked, “Who is the average bear?”
