Lily, IYF

A sign of summer around here and one of the many things I’ll miss about this place.

I love how these lilies look distinctly orange from a distance, but the closer you get to them, the less orange they look.

Baxter

This is Baxter.
Our oldest son Ryan gave Baxter to Kevin about five years ago.
Baxter guards the TV in our bedroom and the feather from Kevin’s hat, the trilby he bought in Greenwich Village.
The end.

Shangri-La

July 2006. I was very pregnant with Atticus, who was born in September of that year.

Ryan, Lucas, and I rode down 86 into North Carolina, past Yanceyville, where Kevin was working in the prison, to Shangri-La.

Lucas was almost two years old; Ryan was 13. It was a pretty fun, but hot, afternoon, if memory serves. Lucas was so excited about the little stone buildings that it took Ryan and me both to keep him off them.

I remember going there years and years ago with my mom and dad.

The man who built it was so nice; he would come out and show off his miniature masterpiece, enjoying the company of people who stopped to admire it.

Since he died, the place changed hands, the buildings aren’t kept up like they used to be.

And the new owners didn’t seem to care much for visitors. (I guess I should be thankful they didn’t call the law on us.) They made their presence known but didn’t come out to chat.

Shadow Symbols

That certain slant of afternoon light was projecting this just right to catch my attention at the gas station.

I don’t have any idea what kind of symbols they are or what they could mean given a strong dose of imagination. I really haven’t thought that much about it and won’t now. I just liked it; that’s all.

It was definitely better than sitting there at Lawrence’s wondering why Kevin is having to refill both of the driver’s side tires on my van with air pretty regularly.

That doesn’t seem like fun at all!

Looking Down

No, not that kind of down. 😉

It was a good evening, actually. After Mass, we took the boys to Burger King and then to see Rio. It was a really cute and very colorful (literally, again) love story set in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Eye candy (Carnival parade!) with a happy ending.

Afterward, in the lobby, the kids wanted to check out the arcade games, and Kevin was chatting with some people he works with, so I just took some pictures. I love to try to see familiar things in new ways, and looking through the scope of the viewfinder can definitely do that.

This is the carpet. I like the pattern.
