This may have been the best first week back ever. . . and not just because it was only four days. 😉
All five classes went well every day, even by Friday afternoon, when many of us were ready to fall out. (I actually ended up going to bed with an awful migraine when I got home but was all better by Saturday morning, thank God!)
I enjoyed meeting new students and seeing a lot of smiles!
We went through the course syllabus guidelines, rules, and objectives; got to know each other a little better; began a unit on the SOL writing domains (the areas in which students’ writing will be evaluated); and briefly reviewed the writing process.
Ninth-graders also started on their first novel-reading assignment: To Kill a Mockingbird. Each student chose a literature circle job to do for the first section of reading, chapter 1-5. The reading and the assignment are due on Monday, Sept. 20.
This Monday and Tuesday, all students enrolled in grades 9-11 will take a practice SOL Direct Writing test. They will be given a prompt (the same one per grade level) and will have to write an essay in response to it. This is a benchmark test that will give us an idea of where our students are right now in terms of their writing skills.
I’ll post this week’s calendars by Monday morning.
