Universal Communication: Dance and Music

Today we watched two video clips in class that depict two different stories of people across the world communicating in ways we don’t usually think of as language: dance and music.

First, Matt Harding travels the globe to dance his fantastic jig with all kinds of people. (Please ignore the title of the clip. :()

And next, musicians from all over the world unite in a recording of Ben E. King’s “Stand by Me” in the PBS-sponsored PLAYING FOR CHANGE: PEACE THROUGH MUSIC:

As I said in class, every time I watch these videos, I tear up. Something about diverse people uniting in these ways awes me. :)

We also talked about some other ways that people can communicate universally, across language, ethnicity, cultural, and religious barriers. We came up with:

  • hand gestures
  • facial expressions
  • artwork
  • symbols (like logos)

If I’ve left anything out that you remember, please add it in the comments. And, please, add your personal responses to these videos, too!
