Download Dramatic Reading Rubric
If there’s one thing most of my students have in common, it has to be a dread of giving speeches. It’s one of those necessary evils, though, and the more we do it, the easier it will get…
Our first speech assignment is coming up next week, and I want to go ahead and post the rubric, so that everyone can get prepared. I’ll be giving these out in class tomorrow and also giving some tips.
The document is actually two pages. The first is two copies of the Dramatic Reading rubric, which will explain the qualities I’ll be grading on, and the other page is two copies of the definitions of the verbal and nonverbal techniques.
Everyone will get to choose their own piece to present this time. It can be anything, really, but usually poems or excerpts from plays work best. It has to be something that lends itself to expression, both vocally and physically, since facial expressions and gestures are part of the qualities evaluated as well as vocal expression.
For some great examples of dramatic presentations, see this post I made last year with some videos embedded.
I’m nervous about my speech next week! I’m going to start looking for my topic right now.
I thought you were going to write your own??
I’m wondering why it says you posted here four hours from now … weird! I should go check the settings. 😉
Is this long enough?
I think so! Just make sure to work on pausing and expression.
This is gonna be one tough grade for me… how is my grade doing now?
I don’t have your grades in the computer yet.
The hardest part for you may be picking a poem…which you should have done daaayyyssss ago. 😉 If you go ahead and pick something, you can work on expression, gestures, pausing, and all those other techniques on the rubric.
I am ready.
