On Thursday, armed with close readings and completed job sheets, students in AD English 9 met with their To Kill a Mockingbird Literature Circles for their first literary analysis discussions.
We had planned to do this on Monday; however, far too many didn’t have their assignments completed. 🙁 So, for this first major assignment, I gave an extension — with grade deductions, where applicable. (I think those of you in my 1st and 6th periods understand how disappointed I was, and after about 30 phone calls home, many of you parents do, as well. :()
However, I am glad to report that I was very impressed with the depth of discussion in groups overall. In observing discussion, and also in assessing the job sheets this weekend, I saw a good number of great points made. And on the debriefing sheet I required, a large majority said they enjoyed being in class on this day. That’s a plus!
Here are the agenda and specific discussion responsibilities for the day:
- Agenda for Discussion #1
- Summary Sultan Discussion Directions
- Passage Master Discussion Directions
- Question Commander Discussion Directions
- Plot Premier Discussion Directions
- Connection Captain Discussion Directions
- Word Warrior Discussion Directions

I would love to hear from my students about your discussions! Please add your responses to the comments below. 🙂
